The Department of East Asian Studies provides a base funding package to PhD students of at least $17,000, plus tuition and fees, per year for five years. International (“visa”) students will be provided with additional funding to cover the international fee differential and UHIP (Health Insurance). This funding package may be made up from a variety of sources including external awards such as SSHRC, OGS, CIHR or NSERC scholarships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships and other U of T funding.

MA students do not receive funding, but are eligible for a number of scholarships. Please note that Canadian applicants to the master’s program should consider applying for the Canadian Graduate Scholarship?(value: $17,500). The application deadline is December 1 of each year, so will precede your application to our program.

The admissions committee will automatically consider applicants for admissions scholarships. Some applicants?may be nominated for university-wide scholarship competitions shortly after the admissions decision.
