Korean Course Enrolment Instructions 2018-2019
For your own registration process, please see the instructions specific to your student category. The below procedures are subject to change.?In many cases, you are asked to fill in an online Google form. ?If you cannot access the Google Form, please see below for PDF forms and submission instructions.?
September 4 interview times:?Korean?placement interview times?in 14229; the placement test will take place following, at 3 pm in 14353
RETURNING STUDENTS?(this includes everyone who has taken courses at U of T prior to September 2018, including those who will still be in Year of Study 1)
Returning students with no background who wish to take EAS110Y1 or EAS211Y1:
Please enroll, or add yourself onto the waitlist for, EAS110Y1 or EAS211Y1 via ACORN?as soon as registration opens for you. The courses are P* courses with priorities for first-year students and EAS students. First-year students and returning EAS students will be able to register during the priority enrolment period. Other students will be able to enrol in the course/add yourself to the waitlist on August 3 (August 10 for UTM and UTSC students).? A mandatory online EAS110Y1/EAS211Y1 Screening Form must be submitted by August 24, 2018 or you will be removed from the course. The Screening Form should only be filled out after you have enrolled in the course on ACORN, or added yourself to its waitlist. Mandatory interviews to confirm your placement in EAS110Y1 will be held on the first tutorial on September 6. For EAS211Y, the mandatory interview will be on September 10. Students who do not fill in the screening form or miss the interviews will be removed from the class by the department, as will students who have background in the language.
Returning students who wish to take EAS210Y, EAS212H, EAS310Y or EAS410/416Y:
Returning students who wish to enrol in an upper-year Korean course,?must have achieved the minimum grade in the prerequisite?or?have attended the April interviews and received a placement.?
EAS Majors/Specialists:?Please enroll or add yourself to the waitlist via ACORN as soon as you are able to.?Please note that the priority period is for EAS Specialists and Majors only.?Students may not enrol in an EAS program of study on ACORN solely for the purpose of enrolling in a language course.?EAS students must have priority enrolment in order to fulfill their program requirements. The department will remove?students?who have?not taken EAS’s core courses. Non-EAS students must request enrolment in upper-level language courses via the process outlined below.
Non-EAS Majors/Specialists?should enroll through the department. The?Korean Enrolment Form?is due?on August 13 and will be available here on July 16 at 9 am. Submit your form as soon as possible since enrolments will be processed according to the date/time the form was received online. You will be added to the course or the departmental waitlist for the course by the department between August 13-17.?Please ensure that there is a space available in your course load for the course. Failure to do so will jeopardize your placement in the course.
*If you do not have the minimum grade in the prerequisite and also did not attend the April interview, you may register for the September interview. If there is room in the course in which you are placed, the department will enrol you in the course on ACORN after the interviews. If there is not room, we will add you to the course’s waitlist. See placement interview/test details below.
**Please note that repeating Korean language courses is not allowed in cases where students have completed over one third of the total class hours in a previous year. If this applies to you, you must take the Korean placement test to attempt to proceed to the next level.
Incoming students with ABSOLUTELY no background:
Please enroll, or add yourself onto the waitlist for, EAS110Y1 or EAS211Y1 via ACORN as soon as your start time begins.? After you have enrolled in the course or added yourself to the waitlist on ACORN, you must submit a mandatory online EAS110Y1/EAS211Y1 Screening Form by August 24 or you will be removed from the course. Incoming students with background (informal or formal study of Korean):
Students with any background at all who might qualify for an upper-year course must attend a placement test during the week before classes in September. See placement test?details below.?After the test, if you have been placed in a course, the department will attempt to register you on ACORN, space permitting, or add you to the waitlist.?Please note that native speakers of Korean and some students with a prior linguistic background in Korean are not permitted to take Korean courses for credit. To find out if you are qualified for a course please read the?program policy.
Graduate students from within and outside the department who need knowledge of Korean?for their research may take a Korean?course with the approval of EAS, space permitting. Auditing is not an option. To be enrolled, you will need to provide a statement explaining how learning Korean?is relevant to your research as well as an endorsement from your advisor (please use the below form). If you have background, please register for the Placement Test?and bring along this form:?Language Course Enrolment Request Form for Graduate Student?You will be registered in a graduate course code. The course is graded as credit/non-credit (CR/NCR); 70% or above is required for a CR.

To register for the Placement Interview/Test, please submit?Korean Placement Form?by March 22. Submit the form as soon as possible; placements will be based on a time of receipt of the online form. The placements will be posted on this webpage after the?placement test.
FULFILLING THE LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT BY PLACEMENT?TEST
EAS Majors and Specialists: If you are competent or proficient in the Korean language already and wish to take Society-Culture courses to replace your language courses, you must register for an?April or September placement test (see the schedule above) to have your language level assessed. Placement test times are not available.
